Ilala Lodge hosts chess tournament
Days after participating in the Africa Individual Chess Championship in Angola, Chess players nationwide will reconvene at Ilala Crest Lodge in Mzuzu for the 2015 National Chess Rated Open Tournament.
The three-day tournament starts today and ends this Saturday.
Northern Region Chess League chairperson Isaac Mumba said they are expecting more players to participate in the tournament because it will be inspected by officials from World Chess Federation (Fide) for them to rate the players.
“This is a very important tournament where players will be rated. With such arrangement we are expecting more players to participate” said Moyo.
Meanwhile, Malawi has only 13 rated players such as Joseph Nyambalo, Joseph Mwale, Gerrald Mphungu, Chiletso Chipanga, Alfred Chimthere, Mbedza Richard, Chuma Mwale, Petros Mfune, Paul Khuphwathea, Francis Banda, Newton Jere, Overton Kanyinji and Stansford Chiwambo, a list that Mumba said is small,” said Moyo.
The tournament is sponsored by Mdima Business Solution, Ilala Lodge and Northern Region Chess League (NRCL).
The winners will get cash prizes with the champion expected to walk back home worth K45 000. n
